Logifruit Earns Its Fourth Lean & Green Star and Reaffirms Its Commitment to Sustainable Logistics

• Globally, only three companies in Spain, including Logifruit, have achieved this recognition, highlighting their strong commitment to sustainability and the decarbonization of the sector.

• The company is the first in the road logistics sector to receive this recognition from AECOC in Spain. This star certifies a 55% reduction in CO₂ emissions, equivalent to the annual energy consumption of 648 households.

Logifruit continues to move forward in its commitment to sustainability and the decarbonization of the logistics sector. Recently, we achieved our fourth Lean & Green star, becoming the first company in the road logistics sector and in the Valencian Community to receive this recognition.

In Spain, only three companies have reached this level, reinforcing our dedication to green logistics.

This milestone certifies that we have reduced CO₂ emissions generated from the transport, storage, and distribution of our packaging by 55%, which is equivalent to removing 1,144 gasoline-powered passenger cars from the road for a year, the energy consumption of 648 households, or charging 625 million mobile phones.

Innovation and Circular Economy as Key Pillars

For Logifruit, this recognition is the result of continuous efforts to optimize our operational processes, invest in technology, and consolidate a logistics model based on the circular economy. Our working system follows the principles of the 6Rs (Rationalize, Reduce, Redesign, Reuse, Repair, and Recycle), allowing us to extend the lifecycle of our nearly 19 million packaging units. All packaging that no longer meets food quality standards is recycled and reintroduced into the production process, achieving zero waste.

This model, supported by collaboration with our customers and suppliers, drives us to continue advancing toward carbon neutrality and to create a positive impact on the sector, the planet, and future generations.

People are increasingly aware of the origin of their products and services. Being environmentally friendly and having a positive social impact has shifted from being an added value to a necessity. But what do people value most in 2024? Keep reading to discover some of the trends to look out for in the year ahead.

The first trend is the strengthening of the circular economy. People are now placing a greater focus on reducing their waste and making the most of the resources available to them by reusing, repairing and recycling them. For this reason, they value companies that save them money, reduce their carbon footprint and support local communities. Product exchange or rental platforms, home repair services and second-hand shops are just three examples of the above.

The second trend that is expected to grow in the coming year is a commitment to transparency and traceability. People are now asking themselves “where do my products come from?”, “what are my products made of?” and “what is their impact on society and the environment?.” They are increasingly demanding accurate and accessible information on companies’ social and environmental practices and the quality and safety of their products. Ecolabels, QR codes and mobile applications that allow products to be scanned and relevant data to be obtained are practices that companies are now implementing in light of these demands.

The third trend that is expected to be prominent in 2024 is personalisation and co-creation. This consists of offering customers the chance to adapt their products and services to their tastes, needs and preferences, and even participate in the design or production phase. This trend will allow them to express their identity, meet their expectations and feel part of a community. Some examples of personalisation and co-creation include tailor-made products, on-demand services and micro-financing and crowdsourcing platforms.

Circular logistics: a key ally in improving sustainability.

Logistics plays a key role in bringing products from manufacturing facilities to points of sale and into the home. For this reason, companies in the sector are already incorporating sustainable practices that allow them to optimise the use of resources, minimise waste and maximise the value of their products. Logifruit has been doing this practically since our very inception.

This is why the term “circular logistics”—a model that seeks to reduce, reuse and recycle the materials and resources involved in the supply chain, from extraction to the moment of consumption—is heard with increasing regularity in this sector.

Circular logistics entails designing products that are durable, repairable and recyclable; optimising transportation and storage processes to avoid losses and waste; and using waste as raw material in new products or as a source of renewable energy. At Logifruit, this is accounted for in the ‘6 Rs System’: Rationalise, Reduce, Re-design, Re-use, Repair and Recycle.

Some examples that illustrate this logistical model include:

In the modern era, companies are increasingly aware of their societal and environmental impact.

In the modern era, companies are increasingly aware of their societal and environmental impact. Environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles are now a priority for organisations that wish to operate in a more ethical and sustainable manner. Sustainable logistics therefore plays a key role in enabling companies to reduce their carbon footprint and have a positive environmental impact.

But, what does sustainable logistics entail?

Sustainability in the transportation of consumer goods entails integrating responsible practices at all stages of the supply chain, from production to reverse logistics processes. By adopting sustainable approaches, companies can rationalise the consumption of natural resources and reduce carbon emissions in the transportation and distribution of products.

The use of reusable transportation packaging is a key part of incorporating circularity criteria into the transportation of consumer goods.

On one hand, it reduces the consumption of single-use packaging. By opting to use reusable packaging, we drastically reduce the generation of waste and the need to continuously produce packaging solutions.

All of Logifruit’s packaging solutions and the processes carried out on its platforms are geared towards re-using boxes, pallets and crates as many times as possible. We extend their useful life by washing, sanitising and repairing them. This approach even extends to the raw material of our packaging solutions, which is recycled by our trusted suppliers and re-injected during the manufacture of new packaging materials.

Logifruit has built on the three principles of the circular economy to form its own ‘6 Rs System’.

Another aspect to consider is the efficiency of product transportation. For example, the design of our collapsible boxes means that, when fully collapsed, they only take up one third of the space in the lorry that they otherwise would when being returned to our facilities. This additional space is used to transport other waste products within the distributor’s reverse logistics circuit,
improving efficiency and significantly reducing the amount of CO2 emitted during transportation.

This collapsible and modular design focuses on sustainability, quality and
safety. This keeps the products protected during shipping and minimises the risk of damage, reducing the costs associated with lost or damaged products. This helps to reduce food waste.

In the context of the ESG strategies, the use of re-usable packaging materials is a good way to meet sustainable logistics criteria. By reducing waste, improving efficiency and promoting supply chain collaboration, companies can make a significant contribution to sustainability and environmental care.

One of the best talent retention strategies is the creation of continuous training plans for employees. Both the employee and the company benefit from this approach.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, continuous training has been proven to be a key factor in equipping a company’s workforce to adapt to unexpected circumstances. It has also been instrumental in digitising and adapting jobs to lockdown restrictions while keeping motivation levels high.

COVID-19 has also brought about a shift in the way these training sessions are delivered. The digitisation of courses has led to a wider range of subject matters and training methodologies, as well as increased flexibility in how training hours can be accommodated as part of the working week. The employee is able to choose when, where and what training session they would like to sit, as well as how they reconcile their work and family life. This is something that has a direct impact on the employee satisfaction and productivity.

The greater focus on continuous training has brought with it two new concepts: reskilling and upskilling. ‘Reskilling’ refers to the learning of new skills and abilities for a new position, while ‘upskilling’ refers to the learning of new skills and abilities that allow the employee to make progress in their current position or one of equal responsibility, facilitating internal promotion.

In companies where internal promotion is promoted as part of the added value offered to employees, as is the case at Logifruit, knowing how to combine these types of sessions is key. We at Logifruit have been applying our circular economy model to the transportation of consumer products for more than 25 years, using washable, repairable and 100% reusable packaging. Our sustainable and innovative model allows us to transport food, hygiene and household products in a closed circuit, where the products are transported from the supplier to the supermarket in our boxes and pallets. By using reusable and collapsible boxes, we reduce the amount of single-use packaging and the number of lorries needed to transport the products, helping companies reduce their carbon footprint.

According to the analysis of the UNESCO Chair in Life Cycle and Climate Change, our boxes have a useful life of more than 120 uses. However, despite their robustness, there comes a time when they can no longer be repaired and must be recycled and re-used as raw material in the manufacture of new packaging. All the plastic used to make our boxes is reused. This means that not only are they repairable and recyclable, but they also contain recycled material. This circular recycling model has been endorsed by the EFSA.

Through this endorsement, the authority guarantees that the material resulting from this process is 100% safe to be in contact with food

Logifruit embarked on this project on a voluntary basis in collaboration with the Spanish Institute of Packaging Technology (ITENE), viewing it as an added guarantee to our packages. We feel that it represents added value to the sustainability of our packaging solutions. We now form part of a small group of companies at the international level to have received the EFSA’s endorsement.

We are fortunate to be able to rely on the experience of our Food Safety and Consultancy department. This multidisciplinary team with expertise in legislation and diagnostics produced a technical dossier on Logifruit’s recycling process, which was in turn reviewed by the Audit department.

The Food Safety and Consultancy department provided technical assistance and support throughout the preparation, presentation and evaluation of the technical dossier which was submitted for assessment by the international risk assessment body.

More sustainable boxes: the fruit of innovation and development in collaboration with manufacturers

Our boxes, pallets and crates are the result of a process of innovation and co-development alongside our partners in the manufacture of our packaging solutions. All of these partners are bound by European Union legislation, which guarantees the highest standards of quality and respect for the environment. Our collapsible boxes are also modular, which means that you can replace and recycle just the damaged parts rather than the entire box. This extends its useful life and helps to save C02 in the recycling process.

Logifruit applies its ‘6 Rs rule’ in its activity: rationalise, reduce, re-design, re-use, repair and recycle. The final ‘R’ has just been endorsed by the EFSA.

Logifruit celebrates World Environment Day every 5 June to raise awareness of the importance of creating productive models that seek to address the three areas of sustainable activity: society, the economy and the environment. This day allows us to reflect on the environmental challenges we are facing and the economic models that allow us to construct a more sustainable future.

The main theme of World Environment Day 2023 is solutions to plastic pollution. According to a UN study, less than 10% of the 400 million tonnes of plastic produced every year is recycled. What’s more, much of the plastic waste ends up in our rivers, lakes and seas.

Plastic has a series of characteristics that make it a very versatile material. This versatility lends itself to a circular model entailing the re-use of zero-waste packaging materials, as we are implementing at Logifruit. Our packaging solutions are used to transport products from supplier to distributor, ensuring quality, safety, robustness and sustainability.

Logifruit’s circular economy model is based on its ‘6 Rs System’, which expands on the traditional ‘3 Rs rule’ of the circular economy:

With our ‘6 Rs System’, we focus on extending the useful life of our packaging solutions. Our packaging solutions are sanitised after each use to ensure safety and quality. When one of our packages breaks or suffers damage, we first seek to repair it, thus extending its useful life.

Our packaging solutions are modular, which means that damaged parts can be separated from the rest of the package. This means that we only need to transport and recycle one part of the package, rather than the whole unit. Recycling processes also generate emissions through transportation, which requires energy. We at Logifruit seek to rationalise these processes by being more efficient in the way we carry them out.

When the parts that no longer meet these guarantees are converted into “gravel”, our suppliers re-inject it during the production of new packaging solutions. Currently, 100% of the plastic that we recycle is re-used.

Our circular recycling model has been even been endorsed by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).

Through this endorsement, the authority guarantees that the material resulting from this process is 100% safe to be in contact with food. We feel that it represents added value to the sustainability of our packaging solutions. We now form part of a small group of companies at the international level to have received the EFSA’s endorsement.

This week, in the elegant setting of Campo Aníbal in El Puig, Valencia, we had the honor of participating in the Official Dinner of ITENE’s 30th anniversary, coinciding with the 24th IAPRI World Packaging Conference. This event not only commemorated three decades of advances and evolution in research and development, but also celebrated the fruitful collaboration between Logifruit and ITENE.

Logifruit and ITENE: Innovation and Sustainability

Since 2004, Logifruit has worked closely with ITENE, establishing a partnership that has been crucial for our development in terms of sustainability and efficiency. Over the years, we have carried out numerous joint projects that have allowed us to implement advanced technologies and innovative materials, always with a focus on reducing environmental impact and optimizing the supply chain.

One of the most significant achievements of our collaboration is obtaining the positive assessment from EFSA (European Food Safety Authority), certifying the safety and quality of our processes and materials. This recognition validates our commitment to excellence and food safety, highlighting the importance of our partnership with ITENE in achieving these goals.

Pedro Ballester, President and CEO of Logifruit, has played a crucial role in this collaboration. Throughout the cooperation between both organizations, he has held various positions at ITENE, first as a Board Member from 2004 to 2015 and then as President from March 2015 to March 2023. He currently serves again as a Board Member since 2023.

Additionally, the continued support of the Generalitat Valenciana for technological centers like ITENE was highlighted. Special recognition was given to Felipe Carrasco, Regional Secretary for Innovation, Trade, and Consumer Affairs, who concluded the event.

ITENE’s 30th anniversary celebration acknowledges its history and past achievements, while looking forward to a future full of promise. Do you know the life cycle of plastic packaging?

The circular economy is the answer to the question of how to reduce the impact of this material on the environment. Plastic is still a commonly used material in our lives, but it is also a material that can be reused and repaired, extending its useful life until it can be recycled.

Single-use plastic packaging has generated a serious environmental problem and, as a result, the reputation of plastic as a raw material is not positively positioned in the market. The particularity of this material is that, today, it offers a series of characteristics that make it unique for use in sectors such as food. Ensuring not only the avoidance of food waste, but also food safety and quality.

The key is to focus on the sustainable use of this material while continuing research into alternative materials and processes that will allow us to continue to extend its useful life.

The European Union's commitment

At the beginning of 2020, the European Commission presented the European Green Pact, showing the direction its action plan would take, with the aim of making the continent “climate neutral” by 2050.

To make these challenges a reality, the European Union will have to place particular emphasis on the use of raw materials through the circular economy. In 2019, Logifruit saved 882 tons of CO2 emissions, and 2% and 3% in water and energy expenditure respectively, thanks to the switch from rigid to folding cartons.

Business models based on plastic recovery

Logifruit was born with a business model based on the circular economy, which we have been evolving to satisfy all the people involved in our business activity. In fact, recently the Ministry of Ecological Transition has selected us for the catalog of Best Practices of Circular Economy.

As we have already mentioned, we are always looking to innovate, and, therefore, we have gone one step further. Our circular economy system consists of our own 6Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Repair, Redesign, Rationalize. Aiming to form a model of sustainable growth and eco-efficiency. We do more with less.

That is why our circular economy strategy focuses on sustainability and the use of raw materials. Our packaging is not only reused and recycled, but we also extend its service life as long as possible.

To be able to carry out this type of synergies and efficiencies in Logifruit, after 25 years, we continue to bet on a collaborative model with the objective of evolving to a digital, circular and sustainable logistics contributing to the achievement of the Green Pact and the SDGs.

Innovation is not specific to an organization or an ecosystem, it can emerge anywhere and organizations must be able to identify it. For this, Logifruit has an Observatory, capable of identifying, processing and understanding the changes that occur at a social, economic and technological level, reflecting on the impact of these changes on the present and future of the organization.

This process allows us to approach innovative solutions such as start-ups, which can propose an improvement or disruption to a previously identified internal challenge.
